The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) is today warning investors to be vigilant to the threat posed by investment scammers, as data from Action Fraud reveals over £197 million(1) of reported losses in 2018. UK reports of investment scams linked to crypto-assets and foreign currency trades nearly tripled over the past year compared to the previous period. FCA Warns of Sharp Rise in Online Trading Scams Linked to Crypto, Forex (FCA) and Action Fraud, the country’s national reporting center for fraud and cybercrime. FCA emphasised on the need to stay alert for scammers who may intend to take advantage of the pandemic. It wrote, “Watch out for scams related to coronavirus (Covid-19). These scams take many forms and could be about insurance policies, pensions transfers, or high-return investment opportunities, including investments in cryptoassets. The British regulator estimates that an average of £87,410 is lost every day to binary options scams. Mark Steward, director of enforcement at the FCA, said: “As people have become more sceptical of investment-related cold calls and consumer habits have changed, we have seen investment fraud moving online and to social media.
